As Ken Cuccinelli continues his Putting Virginians First Tour, the campaign is releasing today a new video highlighting the attorney general’s efforts to raise awareness about sexual assault as a student at UVA.

Teiro: When Ken heard her screams, he ran to try and help her, not knowing what was wrong. She had been in bed, and someone had climbed in the window in the middle of the night and started to try to assault her.

Ken: I’ve never heard a scream like that. To this day I’ve never heard a scream like that. It woke me up to the problem of sexual assault. And so I started trying to figure out, well what can I do to reduce this? And the number is pretty staggering. There was no university-centric attempt to reduce the incidence of sexual assault or to help the victims of it.

Ken: So I did an independent study in the Women’s Study program, and demanded that they hire somebody whose full-time responsibility would be the prevention of sexual assault and the assistance for victims of it.
Text: “Cuccinelli was the organizer of dozens of student protesters who occupied the steps for 134 hours – one for each of the 134 alleged victims.” – Washington Post, 8/1/10
Ken: The University wasn’t very open to it, so we held a protest out on the Rotunda. We stuck around until they said they would get somebody full time.

Teiro: That was sort of the beginning of his interest in trying to prevent sexual assaults on campus, which really became a passion of his.
